When choosing a laptop, we often pay attention to the processor, the disk and the video card used. A very important element is also the RAM memory, which largely determines the usability of the computer.
What is the RAM?
The RAM is used as a temporary buffer for the information processed by the processor or a built-in graphics system. Files and program data that need to be executed and textures that need to be rendered in the game are stored here.
In theory, the “the more the better” principle works here. But when choosing RAM, you should also pay attention to other parameters.
Memory Type – Currently, the most popular type of RAM is the DDR4 standard, which offers higher performance, requires less power and allows for greater capacity. However, some laptops still have older DDR3 modules or low-voltage DDR3L modules. The different memory types are not compatible with each other, and desktop modules (DIMM type) are not suitable for laptops (SO-DIMM type). On top of that, in the most compact designs, RAM memory is soldered to the motherboard and therefore impossible to replace.
Memory Parameters – clock frequency and latency affect memory performance (for example, CL17 memory at 2133 MHz will be slower than CL15 memory at 2666 MHz). However, it is worth noting that not every laptop is capable of using faster modules.
Memory Mode – Most available laptops are based on processors with a dual-channel RAM controller. By using dual-channel mode, you can utilize the full potential of the RAM subsystem, leading to better performance in games and applications. However, it is worth remembering that in this configuration, all memory slots are often occupied and system upgrades mean that both modules must be replaced.
How much RAM Should you need in a home laptop?
A home-use laptop is the cheapest device used for basic tasks, such as working on the Internet, watching movies or using a word processor. It is not demanding, so such a laptop should not be too efficient.
At the same time, the absolute minimum in a modern laptop is 4 GB of RAM. With this capacity you can perform these operations, but in some cases you will encounter problems (for example, when you run more programs or open multiple tabs in your web browser). So opt for a more future-proof solution and a configuration with at least 8 GB of RAM. Frequency, latency and memory mode are not so important here.
How much memory for a cheap gaming laptop?
There are high demands for cheap gaming laptops. Here we often deal with configurations based on a processor with an integrated graphics system, whose performance is sensitive to the parameters of RAM memory. Choosing the right memory can be the key to success.
It is advisable to choose a configuration with 8 GB or 16 GB of memory, which will provide the right performance and at the same time will not drive up the price of the laptop. However, you should pay attention to the performance parameters of the memory – it would be good if they were DDR4 modules with a minimum frequency of 2666 MHz, necessarily in dual-channel mode (2×4 GB or 2×8 GB).
How much memory in an efficient gaming laptop?
Powerful gaming laptops use a powerful processor and a stand-alone graphics card. However, this does not mean that the RAM aspect can be left out. RAM can also be very important for system performance.
Configurations with 16 GB of RAM are the optimal choice. However, the memory settings can have a major impact on performance. Those interested in such laptops should therefore look out for laptops with dual-channel DDR4 memory sets of at least 2666 MHz (although of course it can also be 2800 or 3000 MHz).
How much RAM is in a business laptop?
Business laptops are compact designs that are usually designed for work that is often done on the go. Therefore, these devices are used for surfing the Internet, creating texts or working with spreadsheets. The speed of the system is also important for users.
If you are buying a business laptop, you should choose models with at least 8 GB RAM, but preferably 16 GB RAM. Synchronization is not so important here, but it is good to have dual-channel memory. This configuration will ensure that the system works comfortably even when performing more complex tasks.
How much memory is in the mobile workstation?
A separate category is mobile workstations, which replace efficient desktops. These types of designs are designed for the most demanding applications, such as photo editing, film rendering and 3D or CAD design. Therefore, adequate performance must be ensured, including in terms of available RAM. In the case of mobile workstations, you should have at least 16 GB of RAM, but preferably 32 GB or even 64 GB for specialized utilities. The amount of memory forces you into a multi-channel configuration. Memory performance parameters can affect the working speed of some programs, so it is better to stock more efficient modules.
How much memory do you need in your notebook?
The amount of memory you need depends on how you use your notebook. In most cases 8 GB is sufficient, the solution for the future is to choose a configuration with 16 GB RAM. If you plan to upgrade your computer later and install more memory, it is advisable to check how many slots are free and how many are already full (especially since many laptops allow you to add/replace modules without losing warranty).
But capacity is not everything. When you look at your laptop’s specifications, it’s also worth paying attention to other memory features – type, frequency and memory mode. Manufacturers often use the cheapest (and weakest) solutions in their devices, and these parameters can have a major impact on system performance. You should analyze the parameters and, if necessary, seek advice from someone with more experience.
