HP 2133 mini note laptop

hp2133-mininoteVery small laptop computer which should also mean it is very portable :) but … it is way heavier than it looks, this is what I don’t like about it.

The bad:

It feels heavier than I expected (2.8 pounds / 1.2 Kg), in addition to that the charger plug is very bulky, the bulkiest kind of plugs (at least European ones), that can be smaller.

It has wi-fi, bluetooth, but it doesn’t have a SIM card slot, you can only connect to 3G, GPRS, etc with external modules like express cards or USB SIM modules and of course then it would not be very compact anymore with external devices plugged on left/right sides, you can easy damage them while keeping it in your lap.
When you get a very mobile computer you would like to have internet everywhere.

Battery life of default battery is somewhere around 2 hours, I think it is less than that. This is a 3 cell battery and you can buy additional batteries, a 3 cell one is around  35$ and a 6 cell battery for HP 2133 would be around 60$, the 6 cell battery will make it bulkier in the bottom/back area but it will give it a nice angle when it is on a desk and you could type easier.
If you intend to buy a leather case for it (which is nice) make sure you decide if you will use 3 cell or 6 cell battery first, because case might not fit.

It is kind of slow in my opinion, the model I got was with VIA C7-M processor at 1.2GHz, 1GB Ram memory, there are models available with Intel Atom processors. This model with Via processor appears to be out of resources very fast, it freezes in Yahoo Messenger, Internet Explorer and other relative simple applications (I got windows XP pro installed on it).

Had some problems with the included microphone not working or having a very low volume, I reinstalled drivers and changed some settings and finally volume improved, I thought it was broken and you need some knowledge and patience to get the microphone volume fixed.

The good

hp-mini_note-2133-schematic It has many features, maybe more that you could expect from a mobile computer, again the only thing I missed was a SIM card slot. It has Bluetooth, wi-fi, included microphone, speakers and webcam. It also has 2 USB slots, one monitor-out connector, one LAN cable slot, one express card slot that allows you to fit small and large cards. The included microphone and camera is great if you want to chat anywhere so again an included SIM slot for Internet would have been great.

Case has a nice aluminium finish and I must say it feels very solid, but it might be because of the weight :)

The included camera’s image quality is better than I expected even in low light conditions.

The laptop is very small, the buttons are very large and you can type very easy, they are also a bit curbed inside so fingers will get a good grip. The two touchpad buttons have a rubber finish so fingers will not slip on those eider :) That reminds me… it has a button on top of the touchpad that allows you to disable the touchpad (for when you are typing).

Overall it is a nice laptop and I am not sorry I bought it, this configuration was around 400$ in 2009.

After I saw how it performs on Windows XP operating system I would recommend not getting it with Windows Vista because Vista needs even more resources.
